Diversity of Human Experience

Because this course explored human rights as well as environmental and biological sustainability, we were able to discuss a lot about inequity in the human experience. We talked about unfair wages and living conditions for immigrant workers in fall semester. In the winter semester we discussed the peril that Native Alaskans from Kivalina experience as their land is being whittled away by climate change. Also in winter we discussed issues of race, class, and education in The Other Wes Moore.

It is difficult to pack those discussions into a class with a focus on sustainability. But it allowed us, as students, to choose projects and assignments that lined up with our community engagement passions.

In Evidence #1, below, I discuss the issues and misconceptions associated with gentrification. This was my research brief from the winter semester. I explore how gentrification affects opportunities for people of color, as well as immigrant communities.

In Evidence #2, a reflection letter about my community engagement project with Tyler Hayashi and Teresa Brink highlights the diversity of the Brentwood-Darlington neighborhood and why neighbor-led community initiatives are needed and can be more effective than government or non-profit grants.

In Evidence #3, my bridging "conversation with the other" podcast looks into the fears that drive my friend Elena to be wary of doctors and the government in general. Both Elena and I have had issues with regular doctors, but Elena's fear of vaccines and doctors "playing God" has moved her to make drastic changes to her life as a new mother. What follows is a calm and fruitful conversation condensed from two hours.
